Disruption is Not The End—But The Beginning

How to thrive in the age of Ai and my favorite content suggestions this week

I wanted to kickstart the publication by sharing a story of hope during these times of uncertainty. One that involves Ai disruption and how I already survived a similar transition in the past.

The Spill

In 2009 I attended university to study filmmaking.

That's me in a white shirt producing my thesis film “Tainoir.”

I knew if I wanted to make it in the film business, I needed to master the tools of the trade—which is why I chose a not-so-cost-friendly study program that used 35 mm film.

A few semesters into my education, it became clear that the industry was on the brink of disruption as digital video systems were becoming more accessible and easier to use.

My immediate thought?

“Oh well, I’m royally F’d”

Now anyone with a couple of hundred bucks can get their hands on a top-quality digital camera, editing software, and be a "filmmaker."

“What’s the point of continuing?”

But rather than panicking, changing degrees, or resisting the video revolution, I took my time to really THINK deeply about what it meant and how I could ADAPT to the changes coming.

I thought, if I could use my vision to bloom rather than doom, then maybe I could get ahead of the curve and succeed.

After deep meditation, I imagined a world where:

  • Video production would pay less but also be more accessible

  • One where a video editor would need to do more than just edit video

  • A world where the monopolies of big networks and big studios would be broken to give space to indie production companies to succeed.

And darn, was I close!

The world panned out to be not much different than I pictured it.
