The Fallacy of Job Security
Hi Fam,
This week, I conquered my fear of in-person networking by attending an event in Oslo 🇳🇴
Turns out, most people were as intimidated as I was which made it pretty easy to relate to everyone and actually get conversations going.
🏆 Win
During the event, someone shared a story about how they recently were let go of their job—ouch!
This got me thinking about how fortunate I am to be able to make a living as a self-employed freelancer and agency owner.
The Spill,
At first, I was really afraid of leaving my job and becoming an entrepreneur.
I thought being self-employed lacked the security that I believed traditional employment offered.
❌ Wrong
I’ve quickly come to realize that there is nothing safer than doing your own thing, being your own boss, calling your own shots, and being in control of your destiny.
Learning entrepreneurship is a little bit like figuring out how to grow your own food (which I’m also successfully learning how to do).
🌱 My babies are growing
Once you know how to be self-dependent, you realize that all of those fears you had about financial security were just that—fears.
Once you learn how to source your own food you sort of realize that you aren’t as dependent on the system as you thought you were.
🧠Your mindset changes from worrying to thinking
“I know how to fish my own game and grow my own veggies. Maybe I can figure things out even if everything goes wrong”
The same is true for entrepreneurial work.
If things get ugly, I know exactly where to turn, what to offer, to whom, what to say, and how to negotiate deals to onboard more clients.
If one of my clients goes bankrupt or has to cut down on expenses, that’s OK.
I normally have at least another 2-4 to rely on.
I’ve been given the fishing rod of entrepreneurship, which will forever give me a full plate.
🤔 So How Safe Is it to Be Employed?
When considering it from a logical standpoint, not much really.
And yes, there are different job roles, personalities, and so on.
Likewise, there are noble positions that require teamwork to accomplish great things.
Self-employment is not for everyone. I get it.
But I much rather be in control of my future than depend on the mercy of an employer who could let me go at any time without much to lean back on if they do.
